1712 Action
The Anschutz target bolt action, used in the Anschutz series 1710/1712 hunting rifle, has dominated national and international competitions including the Olympic Games and the World Championships in the small bore rifle disciplines. This is a bolt action, rimfire rifle with cam cocking and bolt eccentrically seated in the receiver. The round action features two action screws. The bolt movement, as with all Anschutz equipment, is extraordinarily smooth and effortless. The bolt face is set back so that the rim of the cartridge is fully supported by the bolt head. The tried and tested arrangement of claw- extractor and cartridge holder ensures reliable case extraction. The one-piece firing pin has a defined end-stop area to prevent damage from dry firing. The receiver is equipped with an 0.43 inch wide, Anschutz Wave Style, V-block riflescope mounting dovetail rail. On some models there are additional drilled and tapped holes provided for scope mounting bases and rings. The independent bolt catch, mounted on the left side of the receiver, limits the movement of the bolt and protects the trigger. A gas vent hole on the side of the extractor groove directs the gas safely to the side in the event of cartridge failure. The sliding safety catch on the right hand side, a recent improvement, blocks the trigger sear in the safe position and simultaneously lifts the trigger sear and bolt release latch. The bolt can also be opened in the safe position, allowing unloading the firearm with the safety engaged.

Used by Boy Scouts in the United States for the rifle shooting merit badge, the cartridge is popular among novice shooters and experts alike. The rimfire round is commonly packaged in boxes of 50 or 100 rounds, and is often sold by the brick, a carton containing either 10 boxes of 50 rounds or loose cartridges totalling 500 rounds, or the case containing 10 bricks totalling 5,000 rounds. 22 LR ammunition is among the least costly cartridge ammunition available. A wide variety of rimfire ammunition is available commercially, and the available ammunition varies widely both in price and performance.

Bullet weights among commercially available ammunition range from 20 to 60 grains (1.3 to 3.9 g), and velocities vary from 575 to 1,750 fts (175 to 533 ms). Promotional loads for plinking can be purchased in bulk for significantly less cost than precision target rounds. The low cost of ammunition has a substantial effect on the popularity of the .22 LR. For this reason, rimfire cartridges are commonly used for target practice.
